Despite the dirty diapers, running noses, constant worry, lack of sleep and complete chaos that has become my life- I love staying home with my children. Being paid in the form of hugs, kisses and cuddles definitely beats out payment in the form of cash. And while I may not be able to afford the fanciest of things (like Ferrari parts or even a new car), I am quite content.

Today, Ethan curled up on the floor, screaming.  Not just a typical two year old temper tantrum kind of scream, but a blood curdling scream.  Once I convinced him to stand up, he was limping..  I quickly swooped him up into my arms to check his legs, knees and feet.  No big screams came from him as I massaged his legs, so I thought it was the mystery limping thing again.  Just as I was about to give up he screamed for me to change his pull-up.. (this is where it gets a bit graphic folks, just so you know).

As I opened the sides of his pull-up, I noticed the largest bowel movement I have ever seen come from such a little guy.  After I got past the size of this thing, I noticed a little bit of blood.  Before calling the doctor, I managed to finishing extracting the goods from his little booty.  His pain was gone in a matter of seconds, but I was still a little worried about the blood.  After talking with his pediatrician, they wanted me to bring him in to evaluate the blood, bowel and to determine whether or not his bowels were impacted.

After a quick trip to the pediatricians, we came to the conclusion that he has a slight tear in the rectum that should heal on its own. He was placed on a very strict, high fiber diet and will be seen again Monday to be sure that everything is alright.  I feel like the overly paranoid mom, but if only you could have seen what I was looking at would you understand.

And to make him feel even better, I have cooked him up his favorite dinner: fish, broccoli, apple sauce and mashed potatoes.  Have I raised my child up a healthy eater or what?

wow, poor little guy. i know the feeling. tears can happen all the time in the rectum, i have always been told a little blood is okay, and sometimes normal during hard bowel movements. but if there is a lot of blood, of course, it needs to be checked out to make sure there isn’t a tear in the actual bowel. wow, that’s an awesome favorite meal for a two year old. most of them would be like “i want mcdonalds!”
