Laptop vs. Desktop

When I made the decision to attend BlogHer ‘10, I started thinking about all of the things I would need to take with me and how not high-tech I am in my every day life. It was shortly after that realization that I knew I would most likely need to purchase myself a laptop– especially if I was going to do this whole “blogging” thing the right way. Is there even a right way or am I totally making things bigger in my mind than they need to be? I guess my other justifiable reason for wanting a laptop is the convenience they present to me in the sense of work and school. If I am away from home, I can still get home work/school work done. I do not have to be home, sitting at my desk in order to get things done.

But then I look at my brand new desk top and feel as though I would be having an affair on my computer should I purchase a lap top. How much of a dork do you think I am now? Maybe we could all pretend that statement was never even written? I love my desktop though and chose it carefully. I wanted a “skinny” computer and a flat screen lcd monitor. Of course, I had to have help with the important decisions made about my computer (thanks Chris), but you get the point..

As a blogger, do y’all feel it is a necessity to have a lap top? Why or why not? Is it an investment that I will come to later love or regret? I have been leaning on the fence for a while, but have not made a decision one way or the other. And for the record– I do currently own a lap top, but it’s useless. There is not nearly enough memory for me to get a thing accomplished.

I don’t have a laptop, but my husband does. We always bring it with us on vacation, and I use it at home in bed sometimes. But we’re pretty nerdy like that. ;)

I think it’s really a matter of preference. I do almost ALL of my computing on a laptop. I take it with me sometimes when I’m working away from home, and sometimes (like now) I just enjoy sitting in the recliner instead of the desk chair.

My dad, on the other hand, is a firm believer in desktops. You can get more memory and basically “more power” in all things with a desktop.

So it really is up to you. Think about what you will use a new computer for, and whether a desktop or laptop would better meet those needs. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. melinda AT melindamusil DOT com.

As a full-time freelance writer and blogger, and now an employee for an adult company that keeps me plenty busy with email correspondence, having a laptop is a downright necessity. But even before my new job, when I was just blogging full-time and doing paid blogging, having a laptop definitely had its perks.

I’ve had my desktop since ‘05, and I got a laptop in ‘06 — which I replaced with a better one in ‘08, and then an even better one in ‘09.

Oh, and I just bought myself a netbook tonight, so when I’m running around I can just drag a nice, small little 11″ computer along instead of my monstrous 17″ laptop lol.

With that said, yes, you should definitely invest in a laptop! It’s true that you pay more to get the kind of hard drive space, processor speed and memory that you get in a desktop, but the definite trade-off is having something portable! :D
