As a full-time freelance writer and blogger, and now an employee for an adult company that keeps me plenty busy with email correspondence, having a laptop is a downright necessity. But even before my new job, when I was just blogging full-time and doing paid blogging, having a laptop definitely had its perks.

I've had my desktop since '05, and I got a laptop in '06 -- which I replaced with a better one in '08, and then an even better one in '09.

Oh, and I just bought myself a netbook tonight, so when I'm running around I can just drag a nice, small little 11" computer along instead of my monstrous 17" laptop lol.

With that said, yes, you should definitely invest in a laptop! It's true that you pay more to get the kind of hard drive space, processor speed and memory that you get in a desktop, but the definite trade-off is having something portable! :D

I think it's really a matter of preference. I do almost ALL of my computing on a laptop. I take it with me sometimes when I'm working away from home, and sometimes (like now) I just enjoy sitting in the recliner instead of the desk chair.

My dad, on the other hand, is a firm believer in desktops. You can get more memory and basically "more power" in all things with a desktop.

So it really is up to you. Think about what you will use a new computer for, and whether a desktop or laptop would better meet those needs. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. melinda AT melindamusil DOT com.

I don't have a laptop, but my husband does. We always bring it with us on vacation, and I use it at home in bed sometimes. But we're pretty nerdy like that. ;)
